We
are a husband and wife team that has been through the fiancée
visa process. My husband was born and raised in the United States
and I am originally from Russia and lived most of my life in Ukraine.
After we met and decided to marry we were surprised at the level
of difficulty at obtaining a fiancée visa. After a year and
a half we are married and all paperwork completed. It was very difficult.
Having been there we realized that there must be a better way. Our
journey was hard fought, extremely difficult, and almost cost our
relationship. There are many choices to make, many papers to be
filed, and many different forms of assistance to get this done.
We hired the most expensive immigration lawyer we could find thinking
that was best. We were disappointed with their service. The firm
lost some important paperwork. They were originals that had to be
re-accomplished. When confronted, our caseworker (a paralegal assistant)
was nasty and indifferent, denying that they ever had the papers.
Then, just when progress was about to be made, our caseworker took
a two week vacation! Most of all, we were not given information,
what to expect, and when we would get results. If you or your fiancée
have been in serious trouble with the law or have children with
unsettled custody involved you probably need a lawyer. As it turned
out, we did not need the lawyer input but we paid for it. Looking
back we could have been together for two weeks in the middle of
all the confusion with the $1,800 we gave to the law firm. After
it is all done, we are thankful to be together but, feel the journey
did not have to be so long, hard, and blind. While apart we relied
on many assistance website forums for information and timelines.
We found a few couples that faced the same battle but all cases
were handled a bit differently by the couples. Some went at it alone
with great research and had some success. We recommend you only
do this by triple checking all information/applications etc., even
getting a friend or two to look over your papers. An incorrect application
can cost 6 months or more of not being together! Others chose small
firms like ours and were pleased but many say they could have been
better informed about what to expect and when. We can and will do
a better job of submitting you papers and keeping you informed.
I have a four year degree (US equivalent) in legal studies but again,
we are not a law firm. We maintain the lowest assistance
fee to be found and guarantee
results.
